Verizon deploys Private Wireless to National Hockey League

In February 2024, Verizon announced that through its continuing partnership with the National Hockey League (NHL), private wireless would be deployed at venues across America. Verizon has been the Official Technology Partner for the NHL for some time, and was selected to create Private 5G solutions at arenas. In the current stage, it is a pilot program with intent to have a larger roll-out at the end of the trial period.

Verizon said that because of its services, the NGL will be able to tailor solutions by utilizing its enhanced reliability, security, speed, and flexibility. Private wireless has focused upon these very metrics to continue to set itself apart from traditional Wi-Fi. David Lehanski, NHL Executive Vice President for Business Development and Innovation said that innovation continues to drive the partnership between them and Verizon. He also noted that the carrier listens and offers the best knowledge and solutions.

Verizon Business’ CEO, Kyle Malady, said, “Our collaboration with the NHL showcases what transformative network connectivity can bring to venues and fans alike. Having a forward-looking partner in the NHL opens up significant opportunities from an operational standpoint, when you look at the business of professional hockey, to enhancing in-game efficiencies and the fan experience.”

The first uses of the venue’s new solutions were on display for the 2024 Navy Federal Credit Union NHL Stadium Series on Feb. 17 and Feb. 18. The expansion of private wireless into the sport and entertainment sphere shows just one of its possible uses. As more test cases and pilots start around the country, the possibility for growth in the industry balloons. You can find out more about Verizon’s new plan at verizon.com.
